Hello Solihull 👋

The Easter holidays are here, which means if you’ve got kids at home for the next two weeks, there’s a fair chance you’re already thinking: how are we going to keep them entertained?

If you’re looking for things to do in the Easter holidays in Solihull, there’s plenty happening locally. From Easter trails and craft sessions to family days out, food offers and easy ways to get out of the house.

It also finally feels like spring might be getting going. The clocks have gone forward, the evenings are lighter, and there’s definitely more of that “let’s make the most of it” feeling in the air.

In today’s edition, we’re leaning into that and rounding up a few local ideas to help make the Easter break a little easier, a little more fun, and maybe even a bit less expensive too.

Let’s get into it.

177 new homes approved for Chelmsley Wood

A major new housing development has been given the green light in Chelmsley Wood, with 177 affordable homes set to be built on the former Simon Digby School site. Solihull Council says the scheme will be 100% affordable housing, delivered with Vistry Group, and will include a mix of family homes and one-bedroom maisonettes.

The plans also go beyond just the homes themselves. The council says the development will include green space, a play area, a nature trail, footpaths and cycle links, along with air source heat pumps and solar panels to help make the homes more energy efficient.

It’s another housing development to be approved in the borough recently and one that will likely spark plenty of conversation around affordability, infrastructure and how Chelmsley Wood continues to change.

A local pick worth knowing: Oakes Farm Shop, Balsall Common

If you’ve never been to Oakes Farm Shop in Balsall Common, this might be your sign to go.

It’s a family-run farm shop with a café, butchery and deli, and it’s one of those places that feels genuinely useful to have nearby — whether you’re picking up good-quality local produce, stopping for coffee and cake, or sorting a weekend breakfast or lunch. Oakes says it focuses on locally sourced produce, while its café overlooks the Warwickshire countryside, which only adds to the appeal.
